He is currently a professor of international law at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. His research interest primarily focuses on the institutional development of the African Union, in particular the process of supranationalising the institutional architecture of the organisation. Other research interests include critical approaches to international law, African politics, transnational policy analysis, and governance and democratisation in Africa. He has written widely on issues of African integration, democracy and good governance, and development in Africa. He has also granted interviews to print and broadcast media within and outside Africa on regional integration and development matters in Africa. He served as the editor-in-chief of the Southern African Public Law journal and is currently a member of the editorial/advisory boards of the Nigerian Yearbook of International Law and the Pretoria University Law Press.
