Dr Ashfaq Chauhan (PhD) is a research fellow and co-ordinator of the Healthcare Engagement and Equity Research stream within the Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation based at Macquarie University. He is a physiotherapist by background with over a decade of clinical experience in Australian healthcare system and has completed masters training in health management and international public health. He completed his PhD in Health Services Research from Macquarie University in 2023.

Dr Chauhan is primarily developing a program of work that is equity focused, especially in relation to patient safety and quality related health outcomes for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities and their engagement in healthcare. As a mixed-method researcher, he uses multi-method approaches including novel co-design that is targeted for CALD communities to develop interventions with these communities to increase their healthcare engagement and improve outcomes. He has developed and delivered innovative tools that have received recognition through awards nationally and internationally. In addition to this, Dr Chauhan’s research also examines implementation of co-design interventions, change management in healthcare and consumer and staff experiences of healthcare. Dr Chauhan conducts his research in collaboration of various stakeholders including national and statewide health systems and services partners, health agencies, consumers and consumer representatives.

Dr Chauhan is also a Patient Safety Movement Foundation (PSMF) fellow and an Early Career Researcher Editorial Board Member for Health Expectations journal. He supervises higher degree research students on equity focused research projects. Dr Chauhan is a multilingual researcher and can speak Hindi, Gujarati and Urdu. He is a sessional academic at UNSW Sydney contributing to Master of Health Leadership and Management program. He is also a member of various professional networks and ECR committees. His PhD was funded by the Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship and Macquarie University Excellence in Research Training Scholarship.
