- Professor, Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary
My research interests lie in combining fundamental engineering principles and biological systems to solve interesting and complex multidisciplinary bioprocess engineering problems with application in industrial, clinical or research settings. I have worked on projects aimed at better understanding, characterizing, and developing methods to manipulate biological activities (such as enzyme applications, and microbial biofilm growth, evolution and spreading) which affect the transport properties of porous structures such as tissues, filters and reservoirs. However, a majority of my work has focused on developing bioreactor-based production strategies for the large-scale generation of adult stem cells and their derivatives. Most recently, my focus has been on the development of methods to isolate, characterize, understand and apply extracellular vesicles, including exosomes, produced by cells.
