Archie Thomas

(he/they)

Dr Archie Thomas (he/him) is a Chancellors' Senior Research Fellow in the discipline of Social and Political Sciences in the Faculty of Design and Society at UTS in Sydney, Australia. Archie is a non-Indigenous researcher and a transgender man.

Archie's research is focused on how educative institutions like schools and the media can change – and have changed – to meet the aspirations of historically marginalised groups. This includes research on issues such as school exclusion and the school-prison nexus, the inclusion and protection of LGBTIQASB+ teachers' rights, the experiences and strategies of diverse journalists in news media, and Indigenous remodellings of education systems and governance as a practice of self-determination and nationhood. He works collaboratively with communities, organisations and government, and on policy impact and social justice.

He is the lead author of Does the media fail Aboriginal political aspirations? (Aboriginal Studies Press, 2020), Yipirinya: education for self-determination (forthcoming, 2026), and the co-editor of Educational Agitations (Routledge, 2026).
