- Clinical professor, University of Glasgow
Antonia is a Professor and Honorary Consultant in Infectious Diseases at the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR). Her research focuses on the clinical epidemiology of influenza, SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viral infections in the UK and sub-Saharan Africa.
She leads the Clinical Viral Epidemiology Group at the CVR. Her group's current projects include using metagenomic and target enrichment sequencing to improve the aetiological diagnosis of severe acute respiratory infections, sero-epidemiology of respiratory viruses and arboviruses in Malawi, using Scotland-wide data to characterise bacterial co-infections in patients with hospitalised influenza and COVID-19, and real-world evaluation of RSV vaccine effectiveness. Additionally, she leads an enhanced syndromic surveillance of severe acute respiratory infection in Greater Glasgow, and coordinates the recruitment and research investigation of emerging pathogens to the Comprehensive Clinical Characterisation Collaboration (ISARIC-4C) study in Scotland.
Antonia obtained her medical degree from the University of Glasgow, an MSc in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and was awarded her PhD from the University of Liverpool in 2016 in Clinical Epidemiology, studying the impact of HIV infection on the burden and severity of influenza illness in Malawian adults.
