Dr Stier has a PhD in Ecophysiology from the University of Strasbourg, working on the relationships between mitochondrial function, oxidative stress and animal life histories.

His research successes include demonstrating that avian red blood cells possess functional mitochondria (Stier et al. 2013 Front. Zool.).

Dr Stier has since collaborated with other academics to use avian red blood cells to study mitochondrial function in non-model and wild animals.

Dr Stier leads since 2023 a long-term research project initiated in 1976 on kind penguin ecophysiology. Recent work within the framework of this project includes stress resilience and heat stress sensitivity of king penguins.
