Anthony works as the Professor of Health Systems in the School of Nursing, Psychotherapy and Community Health in Dublin City University. He is a medical academic, and a public health doctor (Specialist Registration). After clinical training in paediatrics, and public health, he has worked as an academic, and a policy analyst.
His research includes work on disability services, autism, carers, and health information. He has particular skills in the use of health information, health system structure and financing, and health policy. He is currently focused on digital transformation in health care, with HSE colleagues. He led the 2021 (online) and 2023 (Dublin) EUPHA conferences, the largest public health conferences in Europe. His current projects include work on homecare, on complications of hospital care for older people, on care pathways for frail older people with cancer, and on migration.
He is also an experienced Board director and chair, until recently chair of St. Michael’s House, a large intellectual disability service provider, and formerly chair of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service. He is a non-executive direcotr of ARC cancer support services, and the chair of the North dublin Regioanl Drugs and Alcohol Task Force.He has very substantial experience gained both in these roles, and while doing health service work, in change management.
