- Professor of Government and Public Policy, University of Strathclyde
I am a political scientist who studies democratic institutions and theory. I work to bridge the gap between formal, mathematical models of the democratic process, empirical studies of institutions and normative democratic theory. Currently I am working on election systems, particularly gerrymandering in the United States. I am also particularly interested in policy making in countries with coalition governments.
I am author of:
Gerrymandering in America: The House of Representatives, The Supreme Court and the Future of Popular Sovereignty (Cambridge University Press 2016, with Charles Anthony Smith, Michael Latner and Alex Keena);
The Logic of Democracy: Reconciling Equality, Deliberation and Minority Protection (Univeristy of Michigan Press 2006);
I am junior author of The New Radical Right in Western Europe (University of Michigan Press 1996, with Herbert Kitschelt).
