- Professor and Director of Latin American Studies Program, University of Virginia
Anne Garland Mahler is Professor and Director of the Latin American Studies Program and affiliated faculty in the Department of African American and African studies. She is an interdisciplinary scholar focused on South-South political and cultural movements, particularly among Latin American, Caribbean, U.S. Latine, and African American writers, artists, and activists.
Her work aims to shed light on social movement histories, and provide a set of concepts based on those histories, that are useful not only to a range of scholars but also to activists and artists. She frequently lectures internationally, and her public writings and interviews have been published in English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, and Italian. Her writings have also inspired several exhibits in Dresden, New York, Chicago, Charlottesville, and Torrance.
Committed to facilitating interdisciplinary conversation and platforming the work of other scholars, Mahler has done significant work to support the foundation and growth of the field of Global South studies, especially by creating and editing the digital platform Global South Studies.
Her scholarship has been supported by the American Council of Learned Societies, Ford Foundation, and Mellon Foundation. She serves on several editorial boards and as co-coordinator of UVA's Interdisciplinary Doctoral Fellowship in Caribbean Literatures, Arts, and Cultures.
