I am a political scientist working on perceptions of the economy. My most recent book is Politicians and economic experts: the limits of technocracy published by Agenda/Columbia. It was based on UCL research into political economy (the MENMOPE) project, funded by UKRI. It explores ideas about the economy across five countries; Denmark, France, Germany, the UK and USA. I conducted the qualitative strand, interviewing politicians from those countries about their economic ideas.
My 2020 book ‘Rigged: understanding of "the economy" in Brexit Britain’, published by Manchester University Press, is based on an ethnographic study in an English south coast city. I found a divide in how people on low and high incomes viewed the economy. As we move out of the austerity and Brexit eras into the COVID and climate change unknowns, empirical research in this area is going to be crucially important.
