Angela is a Clinical Epidemiologist and health services researcher, Nephrologist and Transplant Physician, having trained in England, Scotland and Australia.
She now splits her time working as Professor in Clinical Epidemiology in the Sydney School of Public Health, Director of Evidence Integration at the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre, both at the University of Sydney, and as a Senior Staff Specialist in Renal Medicine and Transplantation at Westmead Hospital.
Angela’s work focuses on leveraging maximum value and efficiency from existing health data through integrating evidence to shape health service delivery. She has an international reputation for meta-analysis, and for linking health data, including developing and applying new methodology to answer questions prioritized by clinicians and patients. She is particularly interested in moving beyond average effects to understand, mitigate and redress inequities in health outcomes experienced by the disadvantaged. She researches multi-morbidity and kidney disease, and the interplay between health literacy and effective patient self-management. Her research impacts lived patient experience and has resulted in policy change globally.
She is Executive Officer of the Australia and New Zealand Islet and Pancreas Transplant Registry, a clinical quality registry, coordinating and overseeing data collation and analysis for transplant activity in Australasians with severe type 1 diabetes. Since 2021 she has been a member of the Transplant Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ)’s governing council. She leads the Sydney Health Partners’ node of the Australian Research Data Commons HeSANDA program (Health Studies Australian National Data Asset), contributing to building a national infrastructure to promote and facilitate trial data sharing and on-use.
Angela's impact in her field is recognition from learned societies and her peers. In 2015 she won the was awarded the Transplantation Society of Australia and New Zealand’s highest honour: the Ian McKenzie prize for outstanding contribution to transplantation. In 2020 she was awarded the TJ Neale Award for Outstanding Contribution to Nephrological Science, by the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology. In 2021 she received the Distinguished Investigator Award (mid-career), from the Heath Services Research Association of Australia and New Zealand. In 2023 she was elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.
