I am a Professor of Ecology interested in biodiversity change - how it is lost, how we can restore it and the consequences for ecosystems functioning and stability.

My current research activities include Sabah Biodiversity Experiment (a tropical forest restoration project in Malaysian Borneo that I established with collaborators 25 years ago), the Raindrop project (a grassland climate change experiment in Oxford's Wytham Woods) and the ecological research conducted by the Leverhulme Centre for Nature Recovery (where I co-lead the Ecology theme).

I am a Senior Editor at Journal of Ecology and author of The New Statistics with R – a book on modern applied statistical analysis for environmental and life scientists.

My background includes a BSc. in Environmental Science at the University of Sheffield and a PhD and post-doc at Imperial College, research fellowships the NERC Centre for Population Biology and a Professorship at the University of Zurich.
