Andrew Buultjens

Andrew Buultjens is a microbial bioinformatician whose research applies genomics and machine learning to understand the emergence, evolution and transmission of bacterial pathogens. He completed his PhD at the University of Melbourne, where he investigated the genomic epidemiology of Mycobacterium ulcerans, Legionella pneumophila and Enterococcus faecium, developing analytical approaches to study pathogen evolution and outbreak dynamics. His work integrates microbial genomics, host responses, epidemiology and advanced data science to uncover patterns of pathogen spread and adaptation. Through this research, he develops analytical frameworks that improve understanding of pathogenesis, strengthen infectious disease surveillance and support evidence-based public health responses.
