- Principal Numerical Modeller, British Geological Survey
I am a numerical modeller and lead for Smart Observing Systems at BGS. My research is focussed on mathematically representing geomorphological and hydrological processes so that they may: be better understood; contribute to an improved baseline; predict the future state of a system. The latter is particularly important in today’s rapidly changing environment. I have developed specialist skills in representing Earth systems through the coupling of numerical models, in particular for assessing the impacts of future climate change on the geo-environment. Recently this research has focussed on two main areas, coastal morphodynamics and terrestrial landscape evolution. The ability to understand, simulate and quantitatively assess sediment transport processes forms the underpinning for both of these research strands.
In the terrestrial environment I have an interest in the impacts of fluvial and pluvial flow on sediment transport, erosion and deposition. I've also a keen interest in the physical anthropogenic impacts on catchment-scale sediment transport, undertaking regional impact studies in India, Ethiopia, France and the UK. During my career I have worked on a wide range of activities, specialising in: atmospheric boundary layer dynamics; surface water and groundwater simulation; assessment of climate change impacts on environmental systems; mesoscale landscape evolution modelling; run-time coupling of environmental models; high performance computing (HPC); centennial scale coastal morphodynamics; and near-surface atmospheric CO2 measurement techniques.
