Ana Sánchez-Ostiz Gutiérrez

  • Full professor in the School of Architecture of the University of Navarra (ETSAUN). Researcher in BIOMA Institute, Universidad de Navarra

I am a Full professor in the School of Architecture of the University of Navarra (ETSAUN), where I was vice-dean (2015-2019), director of the technical department (2013-2015), and the Master's Degree in Environmental Design and Management of Buildings (MDGAE, 2010-2022).

As a researcher, I have two six-year research periods (2003-2015) (2016-2021) and one six-year period of knowledge transfer and innovation (1997-2005).

My topics of interest are eco-design of industrialised and sustainable enclosures, energy rehabilitation of buildings and neighbourhoods, quantification of sustainable architecture, architecture and health. I have extensive research experience in these fields having participated in research projects and contracts. The results of my research are the articles published in indexed journals, books and CL in prestigious publishers, publications in conferences, 1 patent, 1 spin-off.

I would highlight the following projects in which I was PI: INDUSTRIALISATION OF LOW COST BIOCLIMATE HOUSING (2007-2012), which resulted in the publication of a book, an article in the journal Energy and Buildings (Q1, D1) and a patent; PROTOCOL FOR ACTION IN THE REHABILITATION OF BUILDING ENVELOPE BASED ON PRESTIONAL DESIGN (2013-2015), and which also resulted in two PhD theses, publications in JCR and a web application for the dissemination of the results; ADAPTATION ASSESMENT OF SPANISH RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS TO WARMER CONDITIONS AND HEAT WAVES (CLIMAREADY), from the RETOS 2019 call, with 3 articles Q1, JCR.

Between 2013 and 2023, I have been an academic visiting at the following universities: Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University (UK 2013 and 2014); Worcester Polytechnic Institute (MA, USA, 2013, 2015, 2017); Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, USA, 2014); Pratt Institute (NYC, USA, 2018, 2019); University of Auckland (2022); National University of Singapore (2023) and University of Miami (2023).

On the other hand, I have experience in innovation activities and transfer to society. In 1995 I undertook another new line of research, the result of society's growing interest in Quality, centred on the application of quality and eco-design systems in Project Offices, which gave rise to a spin-off, ISOARQUITEC, which has advised more than 200 Architecture Firms in Spain. The constitution of ISOARQUITEC was based on the previous experience obtained through a European project for the DGIII of the European Commission: THE EUROPEAN WAY TO EXCELLENCE IN CONSTRUCTION. QUALITY POLICIES IN CONSTRUCTION (1999-2000), developed between ATKINS (UK) and University of Navarra (where I was PI), as well as other research contracts and publications.

I regularly collaborate with companies in research contracts to improve the quality of life of vulnerable populations, as well as for the monitoring of the environmental conditions of buildings, energy simulation and energy rehabilitation.

In 2007 I promoted the creation of a research group, SAVIArquitectura (Environmental Sustainability, Housing, Industrialisation and Architecture), which I am currently leading. A consolidated and cohesive research group that covers the different lines of research in Quantification of Sustainable Architecture. I have supervised 6 doctoral theses already completed and another 3 in progress.
