Amy C. Chambers

(she/her)

Dr Amy C. Chambers is a science and screen media scholar and Senior Lecturer in Film and Media Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University. Working across screen studies, science communication, and the science humanities, her research explores how entertainment media shape public understandings of science, technology, medicine, and expertise. She examines how representations of science influence perceptions of scientific knowledge and authority, and why these portrayals matter not only for audiences but also for scientists, policymakers, and funders.

Amy has published widely on the public understanding of science through entertainment media, including work on science fiction, horror, representations of women in science, pandemic narratives, and scientific expertise. She also leads the 'Women Make Science Fiction' research project (womenmakesciencefiction.org), which examines the intersections of gender, science, and imagined futures through an intersectional feminist lens. The project includes a podcast and reviews of contemporary and historical films directed or co-directed by women, highlighting the contributions of women, including trans women and non-binary people, to science fiction media.
