- Senior Lecturer Illustration, Cardiff Metropolitan University
Amelia is an Illustrator and Senior lecturer in Illustration at Cardiff School of Art & Design.
Amelia’ s research focusses on the action of the illustrated image in the world. Over the past 4 years she has been working on co-produced projects in collaboration with Professor Delyth James and NHS Wales under the title ‘Illustration Saves Lives’, exploring the power of illustration as a conduit, bringing agency and advocating for the human in medical scenarios.
Amelia's work and teaching examines the extended powers of illustration through illustrations ability to be ‘a caress’, ‘a scratch’, ‘a graze’, ‘a disrupter’ ‘an enabler’
Both through teaching and practice Amelia uses methodological ingredients from phenomenology and the ‘close third person’, mixed with Brechtian and Stanislavski-an theatre, never forgetting the importance of her childhood plays, imagination, her adventures through running and drawing-at-the-same time, and puppetry. The work now builds the case for empathic approaches to illustrative practice through authentic co-production and the importance of recognising illustration as a humanity.
Amelia is fascinated in exploring how images speak, teach lessons and forewarn.
