Dr Alison Fixsen is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Westminster. Alison has decades of experience in the food, health, higher education and coaching sectors, and has authored many journal papers relating to health, wellbeing and disordered eating. Her book "The Construction of Eating Disorders: Psychiatry, Politics and Cultural Representations of Disordered Eating" (Palgrave McMillan) has been described as 'an essential contribution to the critical sociology of mental health. It offers a comprehensive, meticulous, and complex account of the social construction of “disordered eating” in contemporary global societies'.
Her most recent paper,“Paradoxical bio-citizenship” (Social Science & Medicine) examines tensions between healthy eating as a value versus medical category, highlights food marketing and social media’s role in extreme behaviours and looks at the challenges professionals face in addressing healthy eaters.
