Alexie Papanicolaou joined the faculty of the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment (Western Sydney University) in 2015, having previously worked for the CSIRO, the University of Exeter in Cornwall, and the University Edinburgh at the UK where he was blessed to be part of the Scottish society providing free education to European nationals, including those from his native country, Greece.
He completed his PhD in Bioinformatics at the Max Planck for Chemical Ecology and the Friedrich-Schiller University of Jena, Germany. He works on the crux of biosecurity and environmental science by blending computers with genetics, focusing on agricultural pests.
He is committed to making the research and teaching sector equitable: Alexie was the Deputy Chair of the Australian Academy of Science's EMCR Forum Executive, a member of his institution's data swag for the gender equity SAGE efforts, and teaches in his institution multi-disciplinary Master of Research where students learn to be accountable scholars.
Alexie is currently Western Sydney University's Academic Advisor for STEM Industry Engagement and an Associate Professor in Bioinformatics. He tweets as @alpapan.
