Prof Sumich is Professor in Biopsychology and Mental Health at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) in the UK and Adjunct Professor at Auckland University of Technology (AUT), New Zealand.
He teaches in biological models of mental health, personality, personality disorder. He is director of the Centre for Public and Psychosocial Health and co-leads the Affect, Personality and Embodied Brain research group.
Prof. Sumich has over 25 years of research experience in cognition and the neurobiology of psychiatric illness, including mood disorders. He obtained an MA (I) in Psychology from Auckland University and a PhD in Psychology as Applied to Medicine at the Institute of Psychiatry, London.
His research interests include the use of neuroimaging and electrophysiological methods to understand the neurobiology of affect and affect-driven behaviours (depression, empathy, aggression) and perception in clinical and nonclinical populations. He is also interested in the role of inflammation, Kynurenine Pathways and gut microbiome in brain function and how this might be regulated by lifestyle factors.
