- Senior Research Scientist, University of Reading
Dr Akshay Deoras is a Senior Research Scientist at the National Centre for Atmospheric Science and the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading. He obtained his PhD in Meteorology from the University of Reading in 2022 and MRes in Climate and Atmospheric Science from the University of Leeds in 2017.
A meteorologist by training, his research interests span a broad range of topics in weather and climate science, including the South Asian monsoon, rainfall variability, moist heatwaves, and other high-impact weather events. His work focuses on improving understanding of weather and climate variability across timescales, with particular expertise in subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) prediction, land–atmosphere interactions, and monsoon dynamics.
Dr Deoras is currently involved in a diverse portfolio of research projects examining the role of dry intrusions in modulating monsoon breaks and moist heatwaves, and the impact of land-surface conditions on convective storms. His previous research investigated the predictability and representation of South Asian monsoon low-pressure systems using large multi-model and multi-ensemble datasets.
He works closely with a range of national and international partners, including the UK Met Office and research institutions across India, the UK, and Europe.
Alongside his research, Dr Deoras is actively engaged in science communication and public outreach. He regularly contributes expert commentary to national and international media on weather, climate, and extreme events, and participates in outreach activities aimed at increasing public understanding of meteorology and climate science.
