Adrià San José Plana

I hold a double degree in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Barcelona, where I completed a final research project on the physical mechanisms underlying the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). During my studies, I also spent a semester abroad at the University of Pennsylvania (USA).

Driven by an interest in climate science and applied mathematical modeling, I pursued a PhD at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) under the supervision of ICREA Professor Xavier Rodó. My research focused on climate-driven infectious disease dynamics and combined climate data analysis, mathematical modeling, and infectious disease epidemiology. My doctoral thesis was awarded Cum Laude and the Extraordinary Doctoral Award, and I was supported by the highly competitive INPhINIT–La Caixa fellowship. I further expanded my expertise through specialized training at the Pasteur Institute (France).

Following my PhD, I joined the Global Health Resilience Group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), led by ICREA Professor Rachel Lowe. My research focuses on climate–health modeling, integrating advanced computational, statistical, and mathematical methods to generate policy-relevant evidence for climate-sensitive diseases. Supported by a Severo Ochoa mobility grant, I completed a two-month research stay at Universidad de los Andes (Colombia), where I investigated climate–dengue dynamics across the Andean elevation gradient.
