- Research Lead and Fellow, National Institute of Economic and Social Research
I am: (i) a Research Lead and Fellow at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) - a research institute founded in 1938 by John Maynard Keynes (and few others); (ii) a Visiting Professor at the Meghnad Desai Academy of Economics (MDAE) - chaired by Lord Professor Desai; and (iii) Lead Academic of the UK Cross Parliamentary Party Youth Violence Commission (chaired by Rt Hon Vicky Foxcroft, MP).
I am an economist with broad interests. I was educated at the London School of Economics (LSE) and the University of Cambridge.
My academic journey spans over 40 years of teaching and research across several prestigious universities including Cambridge, LSE, Harvard, Bristol, Warwick, Essex, Paris, Delhi, and Mumbai.
I have held a full professorship in economics for over 27 years and have published extensively in top economics journals.
In addition to my academic roles, I have over 20 years of leadership and management experience.
I have served as the Head of the Departments of Economics at the Universities of Warwick and Essex for a combined 15 years, the Dean of Warwick in London for four years, and the Dean of the Meghnad Desai Academy of Economics.
My policy experience spans over 30 years. Notably, I co-founded and co-directed a policy lab with an ex-senior civil servant in the UK (with support from Lord Gus O'Donnell), engaging with civil servants, policymakers, academics and journalists.
I was born in India and grew up in multiple cities across four countries (India, UK, Brazil, and Italy), attending nine different schools. This diverse upbringing has given me an international mindset and a broad perspective.
I am deeply curious about everything, like the legendary polymath Leonardo da Vinci.
