Meanwhile, the Liberal Party continues to deal with the fall-out from last week’s accusations against Senator David Van.
The opposition leader told Sydney radio: “I think it’s in everyone’s best interests that he resign from the parliament and I hope he’s able to do that sooner than later and seek the help that he needs.”
Federal politics, the tone of which had seemed better than in the last parliamentary term, once again descended into a toxic mire.
The opposition leader says the move is not a comment on the veracity of Thorpe’s claims, which will now be independently investigated.
Thorpe made the claim while Van was attacking Labor for politicising the Brittany Higgins allegation that she was raped in the office of then minister Linda Reynolds in 2019
