University of Wuppertal
The University of Wuppertal was founded in 1972 as a comprehensive university as part of the NRW education initiative. Existing academic institutions in Wuppertal, such as engineering schools, arts and crafts schools and the teacher training college, were organizationally combined and expanded in this new type of university. Johannes Rau, the then NRW Minister for Science and Research and later Federal President, who came from Wuppertal, was one of the founding fathers of the university. In 2003, the University of Wuppertal was converted into a pure university. The initial 3,473 students in the founding semester have now grown to over 23,000.
The focus of university education is on teacher training courses, economics, a variety of engineering and scientific courses, and the humanities, art and design are also traditionally well represented. The specific “Wuppertal” roots of engineering and design education reach back to the 19th century.
